E-mail is dead...

...long live whatever follows, at least for a couple of years...

It's difinitely annoying for a long time e-mail user like myself to see this development. I have been using e-mail for 25 years and I still refuse to even use webmail. I used Elm in the early days, then Eudora, and now Thunderbird. I just want to keep all my mails in a place where I can see and search them, and migrate them to whatever comes next. No clouded proprietary blackboxes for my mail archives :)

Btw As it is now, people who want to replace it with Facebook messaging will still need a non-Facebook e-mail address first to register with Facebook. I wonder if Facebook will change that policy soon.

What will happen if people only have a Facebook mail address? They'll use it to sign up on other sites. They will receive those sites' system mails and (html) newsletters in their Facebook inbox. Sounds like a pre-programmed mess, and Facebook mail may be next on the extinction list...
